FEELING U.G.L.Y?

As women we are sold unrealistic standards of beauty, a beauty that is superficial and only looks to the outward appearance. This standard of beauty often excludes a large number of us causing us to sometimes feel inadequate. The truth is the only standard of beauty is God’s, he is the one who created beauty and society has distorted this view. No matter how ugly you may feel or think you look, this is not true! Here are a few things to remember:

Beauty doesn’t rely on:

  • The size of your clothing
  • If you are in a relationship or not
  • The colour of your hair
  • Your hair texture
  • Your skin tone
  • The size of your nose or lips
  • Your height
  • The amount of social media followers/likes you have
  • What people say about your appearance Etc. (the list could go on)

You are beautiful because you are made in the image of God

Psalm 139:14 I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

*Knock knock* God doesn’t make mistakes his workmanship is next to none, you were uniquely crafted by the best craftsman EVER!

Worldly beauty is business!

Of course if you look to society you won’t feel beautiful, because there is money to made in making you feel ugly! They tell you you’re only worth it if you buy their shampoo, as your self esteem decreases their pockets grow fatter! For the memo you are already worth it because Jesus died for you!

A beautiful heart

A beautiful heart is such a cliché, but it’s true you will never feel beautiful if your focus is on the outward. True beauty never fades!

1 Peter 3:3-4 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewellery and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

God looks at the heart

When God sees us his focus is not on the outward apperance but the heart. If this is God’s primary focus this also should be ours.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

Renew your mind

To start viewing yourself as beautiful it is important to renew your mind by unclogging all the Vogue magazine covers, Beyonce music videos and Instagram models and replacing these standards with the word of God.

Romans 12 Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Make -Up

I love make-up and totally believe we should and can wear it as we suit. I don’t think theres anything wrong with giving yourself a confidence boost; the problem begins when your make-up bag is your confidence. Ask yourself a question, can you leave the house with out any make- up and i don’t mean Instagram no make standards, i literally mean bare faced not even a slight fill of a brow. If the idea sends you into a Britney melt down, then we probably should work on that. I had this problem a few years ago and i would suggest slowly weening yourself off make-up by reducing the amount you wear. Each day of the week eliminate a product so by the end of the week you are bare faced.  I often have days i intentionally decide not wear make-up, it reminds me to have confidence in the natural me.

Say it and Slay it- Tip

Look at yourself in the mirror everyday and tell your self  “I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
